"Alphabet" by Mike Putnam

“Alphabet” Domed Resin Pendant
Designed by Michael Jack Putman

*Warning- This project makes reference to a resin based project. I recommend you read any and all MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) and warning labels on any product that you use. I also suggest that you always mix and pour your resin in a well ventilated are. Wear gloves and cover your work area.

Materials:
Black Polymer Clay
Amate Studio’s 2” Copper Oval Pendant

Ranger Ink’s Perfect Pearls

Prima’s Clear Small Alphabet Stamp

Alumilite Crystal Clear Resin (Found at most Hobby Stores)

 Two Part Epoxy

Tools:
Clay blade

Brushes

Heat gun

Instructions:

·        Condition a good sized ball of black clay in your hands.  Warm it and work it until soft and pliable.

·         Once soft. Squeeze and mold the clay to fill the entire pendant. Pack it all in. As much as possible. (I know this is a sloppy method- but I’m a guy and it works for me).

·        Take your clay blade and lay it flat against the rim of the pendant’s well. Move your blade flat across the pendant cutting away all the excess clay that over fills the pendant. This method of removal should have created an evenly layered top. If needed fill any bubbles or gaps by applying more clay and perhaps re-cutting.

·        Once you have an evenly smooth clay layer inside of your pendant. Lay your stamp on top of your clay and give a little push. Carefully remove your stamp off the clay. You should now have a very nice impression within the clay.

·        At this point brush on your Perfect Pearls. Perfect Pearls bonds to polymer clay when cured. Gives it great shine and is quite easy to use.

·        Bake clay in the pendant. Do not attempt to move it. Follow directions for baking on your chosen polymer clay package.

·        Once the pendant has been baked and cooled. You will be able to remove the clay piece out by giving your pendant a tap on the back.

·       Mix needed amount of two part epoxy on wax paper. Adhere your clay piece with two part epoxy to the inside of your pendant. Let dry.

·        Once your pendant is dry. You can apply a small mix of chosen resin or glaze to the top of your ring. I used a small mix of Alumilite Clear Resin. Poured just enough on the top to fill any cracks and extend all over the top surface of the ring. It helped give a nice domed top. Let dry… all done.

o        *Quick note: To remove any air bubbles from your resin. Run your heat gun over your resin before you pour and perhaps after.
